April is National Bilingual/Multilingual Learner Advocacy Month!

April is National Bilingual/Multilingual Learner Advocacy Month, a time to celebrate the linguistic diversity that makes our schools and communities stronger. At Bellwood School District 88, we’re proud to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of our bilingual and multilingual learners.

Our Purpose:

  • Celebrate the achievements of our bilingual and multilingual learners.

  • Advocate for the resources these learners need to succeed.

  • Raise Awareness of the benefits of multilingualism and linguistic diversity.

  • Promote Equity by ensuring every learner has the support they deserve.

Bilingual/Multilingual Learner Growth in District 88

Over the last two years, Bellwood School District 88 has welcomed nearly 100 new multilingual learners—a reflection of our community’s growing diversity. This shift mirrors a national trend, with multilingual learners being the fastest-growing group in public schools. As our community continues to evolve, we remain committed to providing the necessary support and resources for these learners to succeed.

This year also marks the 51st anniversary of Lau v. Nichols, a landmark Supreme Court decision affirming the rights of English learners to a fair education. This ruling laid the foundation for the programs we have today to support multilingual learners.

Our Commitment to Equity

In alignment with our district’s Strategic Plan, we’ve implemented key initiatives to support multilingual learners:

  • Ongoing Professional Development for educators to enhance their teaching practices.

  • Collaborative Support between ESL and Bilingual Resource teachers and school leaders.

  • Inclusive Classrooms where every student receives the necessary support to thrive.

Why Multilingualism Matters

Being bilingual opens doors to new cultures, enhances cognitive skills, and creates more opportunities for the future. For our students, multilingualism fosters confidence, promotes inclusivity, and prepares them for success in a global society.

Bilingual Writing Contest

To celebrate this month, the Bilingual Services Department is hosting a writing contest for students:

  • Grades 3-5: Topic: Proud to Be Bilingual

  • Grades 6-8: Topic: The Importance of Being Bilingual

Submissions can be an essay or poem and may be written in English, Spanish, or both languages. There will be a winner in each group.

We’re excited to hear the voices of our bilingual and multilingual students!

By recognizing National Bilingual/Multilingual Learner Advocacy Month, we continue to support and empower our students. Multilingualism is a vital skill that connects us all, and together, we’ll create a more inclusive future for our community.
